Edgar O. Gibbins, age 90, passed away Tuesday, April 10, 2012, in the emergency room at Southern Ohio Medical Center.

He was born Nov. 19, 1921, in Portsmouth to the late John and Mabel Herman Gibbins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, John, Arthur, Thomas and Gerald Gibbins and sisters, Ruth Debo and Mabel Emrick.

He was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School, he served in WWII for a period of three years in Central Europe.

He was an employee of Empire Detroit Steel and retired from New Boston Coke Co. in January 1984. He moved to Minford in 1957 and became involved in the Minford community, serving as a member of the school board, athletic boosters, band boosters and PTO.  He was involved with building the original Minford football fields.

He was a member of American Legion Post No. 622 and 94th Infantry Division Association. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Laura (Kronk) Gibbins; daughters, Becky Whittaker of Columbus, Diane Gibbins of Dover, N.H.; a son, John David (Elvina) Gibbins of Loveland; grandchildren, Brenden Whittaker, Kayla, Laurel and Jessica Gibbins, and a brother-in-law, Kenneth Risner.

The family would like to thank SOMC’s third floor and rehab staff for their kind treatment of our loved one. Also the doctor and staff in the emergency room for their support and kindness. A special thanks to Dan and Nancy Bateman for their help during Ed’s illness and to all who remembered us in their prayers.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 14, 2012, at Erwin-Dodson-Allen Funeral Home in Minford with Rev. Dwayne McNew officiating.

Burial will be at Bennett Cemetery in Minford. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday and one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
