Jacob H. Frowine, 102, of Portsmouth’s Hill View Retirement Center, went to be with his Lord on Friday, October 14, 2011.

Jacob was born April 3, 1909, to the late Russell and Bertha Eckhart Frowine. He was a member of Cornerstone United Methodist Church, and he was a life member and Past Exalted Ruler of Portsmouth Lodge No. 154 B.P.O.E. He also was a Past District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler. He previously had been named Ohio Elk of the Year and he was the oldest living member in Ohio.

For more than 80 years Jake served in public education as a teacher, counselor, administrator, activist and volunteer. Jake was active in educational associations at the state and national levels. He was an Ohio Education Association Charter member as well as serving as state chairman. In the Retired Teachers Association, he helped to organize and develop public education policy and to engage retired teachers. He served as past president of Scioto County Retired Teachers Association and was chairman of the association’s legislative committee.

Jake helped organize the first Ohio Retired Teachers Organization to represent the retired educators.

Jake has received numerous awards in his lifetime including the Ohio Education Award, the Ohio Retired Teachers Award, induction into the Minford Hall of Fame and the Kiwanis “Service Above Self” award. One of his most treasured honors came in May of 2009 when he was inducted into the Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame at the age of 100.

Jake graduated from Minford High School in 1927, received his bachelor’s degree in education in 1939 from Wilmington College and his master’s degree in administration and guidance from Marshall University in 1950.

He was a WW II veteran serving in the Army Air Corps from November 1943 to October 1945.

His first teaching assignment, from 1928 to 1931, was a one-room school in Minford. He taught in Minford, Rarden, Portsmouth City, and was guidance counselor in Northwest schools from 1960 to 1965. Retiring after 35 years in education, Jake went on to teach at Ohio University and Shawnee State University.

Jake volunteered in many capacities for Retired Seniors, Meals on Wheels, SOMC, Salvation Army, Vern Riffe Center for the Arts, the Arthritis Foundation, Scioto County Radio Reading and Hill View.

Along with his parents, Jake was preceded in death by three sisters, Dorothy Poetker, Kathleen Ault and Gertrude Oberly; and one brother, Charles. He was also preceded in death by his first beloved wife, Minta Irwin Frowine.

Jake is survived by his lovely wife and best friend, June Newberry Frowine, whom he married in September of 2000. He is also survived by his step-daughter, Dr. Danielle Ripich, and step-son, Forde Jay Newberry and their children. He is also survived by nine nieces and nephews and many, many friends.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, October 17, 2011, at F.C. Daehler Mortuary Company in Portsmouth with the Reverend Clark Hess officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sunday at Daehlers and one hour before the service.
