Wheelersburg, Minford win Academic Competition
Wheelersburg and Minford high school teams emerged as District I and District II Champions, respectively, in the Southern Ohio Academic Competition Tournament. This year’s tournament took place March 9 at Shawnee State University, in Portsmouth, Ohio.

Division I teams participated from Clay, CTC, East, Manchester, Notre Dame, Valley, West, and Wheelersburg high schools; while Green, Minford, Northwest, Oak Hill, Piketon, Portsmouth and South Webster High Schools competed in Division II.

This was a double-elimination tournament with each school playing a minimum of two matches. Each round consists of questions in the following categories: American Literature, Mathematics, World History, Fine Arts, Life Sciences, World Literature, U.S. Government, Physical Sciences, Geography and U.S. History, as well as an “Alphabet Round” where all answers begin with the same letter of the alphabet, and a Lightning Round which consists of questions from all categories.

The Wheelersburg High School team, coached by Brian Oakes, claimed the Division I Championship title. Clay High School, under the leadership of Cindy Parkes, took the Runner-up title.

The Division II Championship was won by Minford High School, led by Coach Brett Oakes. The Runner-up title went to Portsmouth High School and their coach, Amy Keating.

“I'm very proud of my team's performance,” Minford Coach Brett Oakes said. “My kids are dedicated and work hard, often coming in after a long day at school to study, practice, and prepare.”

Wheelersburg and Minford high school teams will now advance to the 33rd annual OAC Regional Competition in Lancaster, Ohio, on May 6, 2017. Teams that win at Regional Competition will advance to the State Competition in Columbus on May 13, 2017.

“The Regional tournament is on a whole different level in terms of competition. Including Wheelersburg, there are three former state champions in our region alone so we have to be prepared,” Brett Oakes said. “That's the great thing about quiz bowl though; the competitive atmosphere motivates players to increase their depth of knowledge across all subject areas in order to stay on top. Therefore we never quit working and our knowledge level keeps rising.”

The Tournament was hosted by the South Central Ohio Educational Service Center and Shawnee State University and coordinated by Gifted Coordinator, Sharee Price. Moderators for the event were Marcia Tackett, Cathy Mullins, Dr. Darrell Rudmann, Cailey Mullins, Chuck Burke, Theresa Havens, Mike Glenn and Craig Havens.
