Imagine walking among some of the greatest figures in history, strolling along beside Leonardo Da Vinci, Martin Luther King and Abraham Lincoln?

That dream becomes a reality at the Minford Middle School History Fair. The fair was held May 18 in Middle school gymnasium.

The history fair is an annual event at the school, it was designed to give students a break from their classes at the end of the year and still be educational.

Former history teacher Belinda Allen started the history fair over 13 years ago. She has since retired but the school continues the tradition.

Current history teacher Lori Rolfe now organizes the event.

The eighth-grade students choose a historical figure that interests them, they studies their lives, their mannerisms and their role in history.

The event takes place in the gym, all the eighth-grade students participate and set up their presentations.

They write a short speech detailing the life of the person, they create a backdrop with facts from their life and dress up era-specific.

The students from the elementary school, along with their teachers, tour the gym and listen to the stories and the history around them.

“It’s fun and interesting. It teaches the younger kids about the important people in history and inspires them to learn more,” said King Tutankhamen (Kyleigh Williams).

The students can work in groups, like Black Plague victims, kings and queens, or group historical icons like Lewis, Clark and Sacagawea.

Williams worked alongside student Sydney Speas who played the role of Queen Nefertiti.

“Nefertiti is King Tut’s step-mom, so our figures actually knew each other. We decided to work together so we could tell their story better,” explained Williams. Speas added, “They’re both really interesting, and King Tut lived an amazing life, he ruled Egypt at age nine.”

The History fair is always free and open to the public. The school district encourages the community to come and support the students in their scholastic endeavours.
