Harrison Furnace School

The school was located near the "Old Harrison Furnace."  It was at the intersection of Swauger Valley Road and Furnace Creek Road.  In later years after it was no longer used as a school, it was turned into a grocery store.  

In 1883 the Directors of the school were:  William Yeagle, Nicholas Will, and Salathiel Elliott.  There were 38 students enrolled in the school.

Obituary as published in the Portsmouth Times 5 Sept, 1957  
Mrs. Bertha Dixon Kinnamon, 64, wife of Frank Kinnamon of South Webster Rt. 1, died at 8:30 a.m. today at the home of a daughter Mrs. Raymond Schomburg, 930 Harrisonville Ave., New Boston.  Mrs. Kinnamon had been ill two years.  She was a native of Slocum Station, born Aug. 16 1893, to James and Mary Daniels Yeley.  Besides her husband and daughter, she is survived by four brothers, Augustus and George of Slocum, Charles of Rigrish Addition and Warren of Twin Valley, three sisters, Mrs. Della Ashley and Mrs. Nora Townsend of Slocum and Mrs. Ethel Pyles of Ironton, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Her parents and three sons preceded her in death. Rev. Forrest Chamberlin will conduct services at 2 p.m. Sunday at Porter Free Will Baptist Church. Burial will be in Meade Cemetery directed by Erwin-Dodson Funeral Home, where friends may call after noon Friday until an hour before the services, when the body will be taken to the church.

Frank W. Kinnamon
Frank William Kinnamon, 67, of South Webster, Rt. 1, died at 6:56 p.m. Friday April 11, 1958 at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Raymond Schomburg, 930 Harrisonville Ave., New Boston. He had been ill about 10 weeks.  Born in Gallia County, May 13, 1890, he was a son of Frank and Katherine Armbrister Kinnamon.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Schomburg, at whose home he died: a brother, Charles Kinnamon of Rhodes Ave., New Boston; three sisters, Mrs. Christine Belcher of Springfield, Ohio, Mrs. Ella McDaniel of South Webster and Mrs. Josephine Widdig of Bloom St., Sciotoville, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.  Also surviving are two half-sisters, two stepbrothers, and a stepsister.  Mr. Kinnamon was a member of Dogwood Ridge Methodist Church and for many years operated a grocery store on Furnace Creek road.  Preceding him in death was his wife, Bertha Dixon Yeley Kinnamon in 1957, and his parents.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Porter Free Will Baptist Church with Re. Forrest Chamberlin officiating. Burial will follow in Meade Cemetery under the direction of Erwin-Dodson Funeral Home. 

Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 tonight and at the church one hour before final rites.

Around 1975 a member of the Ellessor family purchased the building and opened Nine Oaks Market.   The market was in business in the mid to late 1970's.
