Dr. Alexander Pope Hunt
(also known as Dr. AP Hunt)

October 24, 1884 - May 10, 1960

Dr. Hunt was born on October 24, 1884 in Argentum, Kentucky to parents William Leslie Hunt and Sarah Coulter Hunt.

He was a physician in private practice in Fullerton, Kentucky and Portsmouth, Ohio.  Dr. Hunt did not practice medicine in Minford.

Dr. Hunt owned several acres of property at the intersection of State Route 335 and State Route 139 in Minford.  Dr. Hunt's property figured prominently into the history of the Minford Local School District.  A large brick house was located on the property, as well as the now locally famous "Bicentennial Barn."  Dr. Hunt and his family never lived on this property.  For many years, the family lived in Fullerton, Kentucky.  In 1923 the family moved to 834 Fourth Street in Portsmouth, Ohio.  Dr. Hunt continued to reside at this address until his death in 1960.

Dr. Hunt married Bertha Frizzell on June 18, 1913 in Scioto County, Ohio.  Bertha was the daughter of William Frizzell and Elizabeth Thompson Frizzell.  Bertha was born in Augusta, Kentucky.  Mr. Alfred F. Hughes, Minister of the Gospel, performed their marriage ceremony.

Dr. Hunt and his wife, Bertha, had two sons:
(1) Russell Alexander Hunt, born September 6, 1917, died in Greenup County, Kentucky on February 15, 1923.  Russell's cause of death was Ileo Colitis.
(2) Raymond Frizzell Hunt, born July 23, 1923, died in Portsmouth, Ohio on May 9, 1926.  Raymond contracted Measles, and he developed bronchial pneumonia which caused his death.

According to census records, in 1920, Dr. Hunt, Bertha, and Russell were living in Fullerton, Greenup County, Kentucky.  Living with the family was a 20-year-old servant named Florence McGeary.

By 1930, the family had moved to 836 Fourth Street in Portsmouth, Ohio.  The family remained at this address until 1960.

According to the National Physicians Registry, Dr. Hunt practiced medicine from 1907 - 1911 in Fullerton, Kentucky.  He then moved to Louisville, Kentucky where he practiced in 1911/1912.  He returned to Fullerton in 1912.  On March 1, 1923, he opened his practice in Portsmouth, Ohio.  After his retirement, Dr. Hunt spent the fall and winter months in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Dr. Hunt's wife, Bertha, died on January 2, 1959 from complications of an extended illness.

Dr. Hunt died on May 10, 1960 at Smith-Everett Hospital in Portsmouth, Ohio.  Dr. Hunt's obituary is below:

Heart Attack Ends 50-Year Career of Physician, 75

Dr. A. P. Hunt, 75, of 836 Fourth Street, a Portsmouth physician since 1911, died at 1:30 a.m. today in Smith-Everett Hospital.

Dr. Hunt, who had suffered a heart attack at his home Saturday night, had been a patient at the hospital since Sunday morning.

Born Alexander Pope Hunt on October 23, 1884 in Greenup County, Kentucky, he was a son of William Hunt and Sarah Coulter Hunt.

Surviving are a brother, Ernest Leslie Hunt, 2222 Vinton Avenue, and two nephews, Dr. William Frizell of Louisville, Kentucky and Dr. Robert Frizell of Chillicothe.

Dr. Hunt was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and two children.

Portsmouth Career Long

He was a licensed pharmacist before he entered medical school and had been a practicing physician in Portsmouth since shortly after he obtained his medical degree.

Dr. Hunt completed post graduate work in surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, and at Bellevue Hospital in New York City.  He also completed specialist work in eye, ear and nose surgery at Poly-Clinic Hospital in Chicago.

The surgeon was on the medical staff of Smith-Everett and Portsmouth General Hospitals. 

Dr. Hunt was a member of the Portsmouth Chapter of the American Academy of General Practice, the American Medical Association, the Ohio Medical Association, and the Scioto County Medical Society.

Surgeon for Railways 

He was a surgeon for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway and Norfolk & Western Railway Company.

Dr. Hunt also was a member of First United Presbyterian Church, Rotary Club, Masons, Knights Templar, Scioto Area Council of Boy Scouts, and its health and safety committee, and the Fort Lauderdale, Florida Garden Club.

He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a Shriner Holding a major interest in scouting.  Dr. Hunt was a member of the board of the Scioto Area Countil of Boy Scouts for 10 years.  He was supervisor of the medical and first aid programs at Camp Oyo in the summer seasons.

Dr. Hunt had a residence in Florida.

Funeral services are to be conducted at 2:15 p.m. Thursday at Daehler Funeral Home.  Rev. P. James Vandyke is to officiate.  Interment is to be in Mt. Zion Cemetery at Frost, Kentucky.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 tonight.  Masonic services are to be conducted at the funeral home at 8 p.m. Wednesday. 

 

After Dr. Hunt's death, his property in Minford, Ohio was inherited by his brother, Ernest Leslie Hunt.
