Harold E. "Monk" Everling, 93, formerly of Scioto County, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009, at Fairfax Nursing Center in Fairfax, Va.

 He was born Nov. 30, 1915, in New Boston, the only child of Firman Everling and Clara Lintz Everling. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Frances I. Oliver Everling.

 He is survived by a son, Harold "Chip" Everling, and a daughter-in-law, Elsa Ever-ling, both of Fairfax, Va.; two grandchildren, Laura Everling Mulchay of Las Vegas, Nev., and Chris Everling of Ash-burn, Va.; and a great-grandson, Austin Mulchay, also of Las Vegas.

 "Monk" was a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University where he starred as quarterback from 1935 through 1937. He earned his Master of Science degree at Ohio University in 1951.

After graduating from Eastern, he taught and coached at his Alma mater, Glenwood High School in New Boston.

During World War II, Everling served as First Lieutenant in the 367th fighter bomber group, Ninth Air Force and U.S. Army Air Corps in Europe. After military service, he became a teacher and the first football coach at Washington Township High School, now Portsmouth West, and served in that capacity through 1960 when he became principal of Minford High School, eventually becoming superintendent of that district.

In the mid 1960s, Everling accepted a position as superintendent of La Brae School District near Warren, Ohio, where he completed his career in Ohio education.

After retirement, Mr. Everling lived for the past several years in Lakeland, Fla., with his wife Frances until her death in February 2008.

 Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, at D.W. Swick Funeral home in New Boston, with the Rev. Frank James officiating. Interment will be at Green-lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday 4 to 6 p.m. and Saturday 9 to 10 a.m. at D.W. Swick in New Boston.

 In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations in Harold Everling's name to the Alzheimer's Association, 644 Linn St., Suite 1026, Cincinnati, OH 45203.
