Pvt. Rider Dies On Pacific Isle
Sciotoville Soldier Victim Of Typhus Fever

Mrs. Lillian Aeh Rider, 1127 Mayo Street, Sciotoville, Monday night was advised by the war department of the death of her husband, Pvt. Herbert Rider, 30, who passed away December 21 on the island in the southwest Pacific.

Pvt. Rider had corresponded with home folk up until two weeks ago and December 21 Mrs. Rider received a telegram that he was seriously ill with scrub typhus fever.

No further word was received until the message of his death.

Pvt. Rider entered the service April 3, 1943, at Ft. Thomas.  He was assigned to overseas duty October 4, 1943 and had been serving with an air base engineer corps.

He was born on Bonser Run October 4, 1913, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Rider.  He attended the Bonser Run elementary school and Minford High School.  He was employed for sometime in the Kroger grocery store on Harding Avenue, Sciotoville, and prior to entering the service was employed in a shipyard at Baltimore.

Pvt. Rider is survived by his wife, his parents, two brothers, Albert of Bonser Run, and Sgt. Lawrence Rider, who is in the army and on the east coast awaiting assignment to overseas duty, and a sister, Mrs. Weltha Hutchinson of Bonser Run.

The body of Pvt. Herbert E. Rider, 30, son of Jacob and Dora Bender Rider of Bonser Run, was to arrive here from Columbus this afternoon.  It will be taken to Gill Funeral Home.
 
Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at 2 p.m. Thursday with Rev. Charles Reinhard in charge and burial in Memorial Park Cemetery.  The body will remain at the funeral home.
 
Pvt. Rider died of typhus December 21, 1943 while serving with the army on Goodenough Island in the South Pacific.
