Pfc. Herman B. Spradling

The following was taken from The Portsmouth Times, Tuesday, April 10, 1945, p. 2.

Pfc. Herman B. Spradling, of Madison, West Virginia, brother of Mrs. C. F. Morton, 1108 18th Street, was killed in Germany March 27 while serving with a unit of the army engineers.

Pfc. Spradling was a son of the late Rev. and Mrs. H. A. Spradling of Madison, West Virginia were former residents of Sciotoville.  The son attended school in Sciotoville and finished his education in Madison.

He entered the service in November 1943 and went overseas in 1944.  He attended basic training at Ft. Belvair in Virginia.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Eunice Spradling, and the following brothers and sisters:  C. S. Spradling of Durham North Carolina, James Spradling of Wheeling, T. E. Spradling of Charleston, Mrs. Horton, Mrs. V. B. Martin of Huntington, Mrs. H. G. Sheets of  Beckley, West Virginia, Mrs. B. L. Gibson of Portsmouth, Virginia, and half-brother E. S. Deck of Madison.

 

Obituary
Spradling Funeral To Be Held Sunday 
 
Funeral services for Pfc. Herman B. Spradling son of the late Rev. and Mrs. H. A. Spradling who was killed in Germany on March 27, 1945 will be held Sunday at the home of his half-sister, Mrs. J. W. Persinger of East Main Street with the Rev. James Neal officiating.
 
Pfc. Spradling, 33, formerly of Madison, enlisted in the Army at Portsmouth in 1944 and overseas was attached in the engineer corps.  He participated in the Battle of the Bulge.
 
In addition to Mrs. Persinger, he is survived by a full sister, Mrs. Mildred Jones of Huntington and the following half-sisters:  Mrs. C. F. Morton and Mrs. Tom Conley of Portsmouth, Ohio, and Mrs. B. L. Gibson of Norfolk, Virginia.  Also two full brothers:  Wriston Spradling of Portsmouth, Ohio and Seibert Spradling of Durham, North Carolina, and a step-brother, Theodore Spradling of Charleston.
 
Also surviving are three uncles, T. G. Honaker, Frank Honaker and Bill Honaker all of Beckley.  He was a grandson of the late A. J. Honaker of Beckley.
 
Pallbearers will be Harry Anderson, Floyd Sayre, Kermit Locke, Ned Ragland, W. H. Fite, Jr., Dr. E. H. Hendrick, Berk Lynch and Charles T. Ross, Jr.
 
Burial will be in the American Legion cemetery with the Beckley American Legion Post 32 conducting graveside rites.
