James Cecil Warne owned & operated a funeral home in Minford from 1927 to 1933.  He began working as an undertaker in 1926 in Waverly, Ohio.  Shortly after, he moved his business to Minford.  In March of 1933 he moved his business to Stockdale, Ohio.  

Mr. Warne was the victim of a hit and skip accident on Route 35, a half-mile north of the Jackson city limits.  He died a few hours later at the hospital.  He was 37 at the time of his death.

The Portsmouth Times, December 6, 1927 - CARS COLLIDE

A Hudson sedan belonging to James Warne, undertaker at Minford, and a Ford roadster belonging to Thomas Metzger of Blue Run, were damaged Sunday night in a collision at Oertel's Corner, Minford Pike.

According to Warne, he was en route to Portsmouth and Metzger was en route home, the two cars meeting on the curve at Oertel's Corner.

The Ford received the worst of the argument and was damaged badly.  The Hudson sustained a crumpled fender.

WARNE FAMILY BEING PURSUED BY MISFORTUNE

Misfortune is coming in bunches for the J. C. Warne family of Stockdale.  Well known Minford undertaker, was painfully burned when a bottle of carboilc acid was accidentally upset on his back.  His wife is suffering from an attack of typhoid fever and his daughter, Martha Lou, 5, has the whooping cough.

MARTHA WARNE DIES SUDDENLY; Series of Misfortunes Pursues Undertaker's Family; Parent Stricken

A series of misfortunes, which has pursued the J. C. Warne family of Minford, was climaxed Tuesday by the sudden death in Mercy Hospital of Martha Lou Warne, five-year-old daughter and only child.

Her mother, also a patient in the hospital recovering from a severe attack of typhoid fever, collapsed at the deathbed of her daughter, and is in a serious condition.  The father, a prominent Pike and Scioto County undertaker, is recovering from carbolic acid burns received recently when the acid was accidentally spilled over his body.

The child died at 3 p.m. Tuesday following a short illness of whooping cough and complications.  She was thought to be recovering from whooping cough, but was taken suddenly worse Tuesday afternoon and accompanied by her parents rushed to Mercy Hospital at 3 p.m.

Besides her parents she is survived by Mr. and Mrs. C. M Emory, Stockdale and Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Warne of Waverly.  The little girl was a favorite in the Minford and Stockdale community and her sudden death came as a decided shock to friends and relatives and caused much sorrow.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in the Stockdale M. E. Church, Rev. Linton Maddox in charge and burial will take place in the Evergreen cemetery at Waverly.  Undertaker Rhoads, Lucasville.

J C WARNE, 37, HIT-SKIP VICTIM, PASSES AWAY OF SKULL INJURY

J. C. (Jimmie) Warne, 37, widely known Stockdale undertaker, died at 6:05 a.m. Sunday in Holzer Hospital, Gallipolis, of injuries suffered when he was struck by a hit-skip driver Saturday night on Route 35, a half mile north of the Jackson city limits.

Death was caused by a skull fracture, fractured hip and internal injuries.

At jackson, Sheriff C. E. Cramer said today that he still is without clues as to the identity of the hit-skip driver.  Officers are searching for a "dark 1935 sedan" which is said to have struck three cars, including the Warne car.  Sheriff Cramer said he has investigated six leads without results.

WAS ON WRONG ROAD      

Mr. Warne was en route to McArthur to cancel plans with a friend for an airplane trip to Columbus on Sunday.  He got off the McArthur road by mistake and was  headed back toward Route 75 when his automobile was sideswiped by another machine.  Mr. Warne had gotten out of his car to determine the extent of the damage when another machine hit him.

The accident occurred near the Oscar Bennett store and wrecking shop and Mr. Bennett, hearing the crash, investigated and found Mr. Warne.  An operator of the Beaver telephone exchange identified Mr. Warne.  He was taken to Holzer Hospital in the Clyde Mayhew ambulance.

His father, L. O. Warne of Piketon, was notified of the accident and was at his son's bedside when he passed away.  Mr. Warne's wife, Mrs. Opal Warne, was visiting relatives in Owasso, Michigan and arrived home Sunday night.

Mr. Warne was born June 16, 1902 in Pike County, son of L. O. and Myrtle Helobaugh Warne.  He attended Piketon High School, Pike County Normal School and Wilmington College.  He was graduated from the embalming school at Columbus.

FUNERAL DIRECTOR FOR 13 YEARS

He had been a funeral director for the last 23 years, starting in business at Waverly.  For the last six years he had been located at Stockdale.  Mr. Warne was a member of the Waverly Masonic Lodge, Orient 132.

On July 20, 1924 he was married to Miss Opal Emory, who survives.  He also leaves his parents, two sisters and a brother, Forest Warne and Miss Helen Warne of Pike County and Mrs. Homer Stahler, 1038 18th Street.  A daughter, Martha Lou, 5, died July 25, 1932.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Stockdale Methodist Church, with Rev. David Williams, assisted by Rev. Linton Mattox, a former pastor, and Rev. Charles Reinhard, officiating.  A Masonic service will be conducted at the cemetery.  Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery, Waverly, under the direction of Windel-Howland.  The body is at the residence.

WARNE FUNERAL HOME TO CONTINUE BUSINESS; Wife of Late Stockdale Man Will Carry On

Mrs. Opal Warne of Stockdale, wife of the late J. C. Warne, prominent funeral director in that locality who recently died following an automobile accident, has announced that she will continue the business started by her husband.

Earl Fisher of Wilmington has been employed by Mrs. Warne to serve as active head of the business.  Mr. Fisher is an embalmer.
