LT. Warren, Pvt. Lowe War Casualties

Two more names were added to Scioto Co's WW II casualty list today with official announcement from the war department of the deaths of Lt. Lewis Warren, 22, and Pvt. Ceaph Lowe, 34.

Second Lt. Warren was killed June 7, in an airplane at his base at Natal, Brazil. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Robert Warren of Sciotoville Rt. 2.

Pvt. Lowe, stationed in England, was reported killed in action May 30. He was the husband of Mrs. Dora Lowe, 5328 Coolidge Ave., Sciotoville, and a son of Mr. and Mrs. Willard Lowe of Sciotoville.

Lt. Warren, a pilot in the ferrying command, was a guest of his parents for five days four weeks ago when he was returning to Natal from a flight to England. He made many trans-Atlantic trips, stopping in England, Italy, India, North Africa, Scotland and Ireland.

Lt. Warren enlisted four years ago shortly after his graduation from Minford High School. He received his basic training at Chanute Field, Rantoul, Ill., and after taking a course in mechanical aviation was sent to Panama for a year. He was transferred back to the States from Panama for pilot training in Texas. After receiving his wings a year and a half ago at Ellington Field, Tex., he was sent to Natal.

The aviator was born May 25, 1922, at Minford.

Surviving besides his parents are five sisters, Rita, at home, Mrs. Aletha Workman of West Portsmouth, Mrs. Oscar Pigg of Lucasville, Mrs. Fayida Shoemaker of Minford and Mrs. Carol Howerton of Portsmouth, Va., and a brother, Curtis, at home.

It is presumed that Pvt. Lowe was killed in action over France or Germany.

Two Scioto County soldiers are among the 1.150 servicemen whose bodies are being returned to the United States from the Caribbean and South America aboard the Honda Knot, the army announced today.
 
The remains are to be sent home for final interment from San Francisco where the Honda Knot is to dock today.
 
The local men are 2nd Lt. Lewis Warren, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Warren of Sciotoville Route 2 and Pvt. Cecil Hannah, son of Mrs. Pearl Hannah of  Lucasville.
 
Lt. Warren, a pilot in the ferry command was killed June 7, 1944 in an airplane crash in Natal, Brazil.  He was 22.
 
Pvt. Hannah, first soldier fatality from Lucasville during the war, died of a gun wound on the Dutch West Indies island of Aruba off the coast of Venezuela in March 1942.  He was 23.

Military rites and burial were held on April 29 in Arlington Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia for Lt. Lewis Warren, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Warren of Minford.
 
Lt. Warren was killed in 1944 in an airplane crash in Brazil.
 
Servicemen at nearby Ft. Meyers acted as guides for the relatives of the deceased while members of the US Marine Band served as attendants at the main burial.
 
Relatives who attended the funeral were the mother, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Workman and son, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Shoemaker, Mrs. Oscar Piggs, Mrs. Frank Poole, and Mrs. Carl Osmeyer all of Portsmouth and vicinity.  Also attending were Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Howerton and one son of Portsmouth, Virginia.
