Article taken from The Morning News Review, October 19, 1927

Portsmouth, Ohio
Oct. 18 (AP)

Going into a nose dive when they attempted to land their "Swallow" biplane at the Portsmouth Airport this afternoon, William Cottrell, 50, of Cleveland, was fatally injured and his son, Chester Cottrell, 27, also of Cleveland, was seriously injured.

The plane crashed in a corn field just off a highway opposite the Scioto county infirmary about three miles from Portsmouth. Both men were rushed to a hospital here where the elder Cottrell died. He sustained a crushed skull when the motor crashed through the fuselage.

The young Cottrell sustained a broken leg and internal injuries. The victims were on their way from Cleveland to the south on a combined business and pleasure trip. Both men were married. The younger Cottrell was piloting the plane when it crashed.
