We are attempting to record important "last" events that happened in the Portsmouth area. Much of our information was taken from microfilmed articles of The Portsmouth Times housed at the Portsmouth Public Library.
Last Buffalo in Scioto County - 1801

Phillip Salladay is credited with the last buffalo kill in Scioto County around 1801.
Salladay reportedly killed the beast while hunting with his boy in Pine Creek, near what is now Chaffin's Mills.
Salladay and the boy crept up close to the buffalo and Salladay shot it. The animal was wounded and charged them. As the boy was getting his rifle ready to shoot, the father snatched it from him and killed the buffalo.
