War Casualty Total Mounts

Soldier Near Sciotoville Killed in France

Scioto County's list of war dead increases to 94 when word was received today that First Sgt. Raymond Spriggs, 24, of near Sciotoville was killed in action in France on June 15.

Additional names from the list from Scioto County include those of Lt. James Roney of the Marines, wounded in action in the South Pacific and Cpl. Roy Newman of McDermott, wounded in France.

Word was also received that Pvt. Sennet Hugart, Jr, husband of Mrs. Lucille Crisp Hugart of South Portsmouth, was wounded seriously on battle on New Guinea.

A letter received by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Warren of near Sciotoville confirmed the death of their son, Lt. Lewis Warren in an airplane crash in Brazil on June 7.

Sgt. Spriggs was a son of Lewis Spriggs of Sciotoville Rt. 2. He was serving with the Fourth Division, one of three which was credited with taking the French port of Cherbourg and it is probably where he was killed in the final attack on the city.

He had been stationed in England since January. In service three years in March, he had received training at Ft. Thomas in KY, Camn Wolters, Camp Gordon, and Ft. Dix.

He attended Madison township schools and was graduated from Minford High School in 1937. He was employed by the Atina Firebrick Co. prior to entering the service.
