Carl E. Shuter, 83, of Portsmouth, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2007, in Wesley Village at Hill View Retirement Center.
Born June 22, 1924, in Minford, he was a son of the late Henry and Shirley Irwin Shuter, a retired assistant superintendent for Portsmouth City
Schools and an Army veteran of World War II. Carl was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, a graduate of Minford High School, Rio Grande College, and received his master's degree from Marshall University. He was a member of Western Sun Masonic Lodge, past patron of Wheelersburg Eastern Star, Scottish Rite in Cincinnati, a former volunteer for Southern Ohio Medical Center and SOMC Hospice Center, a member of the 52 Dance Club and James Dickey Post of the American Legion. Carl was a principal at the former Lindsay and Harding Schools, and former co-owner of Village Cleaners in Wheelersburg.
Surviving are his wife and sweetheart of 59 years, Janet Edgington Shuter; three sons, Timothy C. (Becky) Shuter of Mesa, Ariz., Terry L. (Kathy) Shuter of Lewis Center, and Mark H. (Jayma) Shuter of Chillicothe; a sister, Evelyn Kinker of Lexington, Ky.; six grandchildren, Sherry Higgins, Alan Shuter, Katie Shuter- Humphress, Mark Henry Shuter, Jay Michael Shuter and Brandon Lortz; and four greatgrandchildren, Cheyenne, Jay and Ella Higgins and Rylie Jaye Humphress.
Also preceding him in death were brothers, Paul and Glen Shuter; a grandson, Joshua Rhoades; and a great-grandson, Nicholas Carl Shuter.
A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Brant Funeral Home in Portsmouth, with the Rev. Richard North officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery. Friends may call at Brant's in Portsmouth from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
