Ellen Louise Shump

September 21, 1946 - August 3, 1959

 

Ellen Louise Shump, 12 year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Shump, will not be among her classmates this year as an eighth grader at Minford school.

 

The young girl died yesterday shortly after 3 p.m. in Lancaster-Fairfield Hospital of brain injuries received in a two car crash Sunday on U.S. Route 22.

 

Mrs. AndreaFugitt, 47, Portsmouth, Ellen's aunt, was the driver of the car in which Ellen was a passenger.  Mrs. Fugitt had left one of her daughters at Lancaster Methodist camp ground and was taking the other home to Portsmouth with her.  Little Ellen had come along to keep her aunt company on the auto trip, her last.

 

Mrs. Fugitt and three others were hurt in the crash Sunday at 5:45 p.m. on US Route 22 six and one-half miles west of Lancaster.   All were treated and released at Lancaster-Fairfield Hospital.

 

Those injured were Mrs. Fugitt,  back injuries and lacerations of the forehead; Hattie Fugitt, 16, bruised neck and legs; Jane Fugitt, 14, bump on the hea; and Donald E. Sterling, 27, of 1043 Fay Avenue, driver of the second auto, lacerations of the forehead, bruises of the face, knees and ribs.

 

The accident, according of state highway patrolman, occurred when Mrs. Fugitt drove off the right side of the road onto the berm, came back onto the road and lost control, swerving into the path of Sterling's oncoming auto.

 

Ellen Shump is survived by her parents; one brother, John A. Shump, Jr. and one sister, Mary Ann all at home.

 

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Windel-Howland Funeral Home in Portsmouth, with Rev. David Pieratt officiating.  Burial will be made in Memorial Burial Park in Portsmouth.
