Herman R. Eshem, 89, of Sciotoville, died Monday, September 16, 2013, in Winston-Salem, NC.  Born on December 26, 1923 in Scioto County, he was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Eshem, Ethel Howard Eshem and Mildred Hanes Eshem.  Herman was a member of the Minford United Methodist Church and the Sciotoville V.F.W. Post, was a former Harrison Township Trustee and owner/operator of the former Eshem’s Grocery in Rigrish Addition.  He was married to Helen Sturgill Eshem, who survived him.  Herman was a proud veteran of World War II, having served in the Army Air Corps in the European Theater.

Also preceding him in death were a son, Tommy Richard Eshem, four brothers, William, Robert, John and Douglas Eshem, and four sisters, Delores Eshem, June Eshem, Nancy Eshem and Phyllis Newman.

Surviving are a daughter, Linda (Bill) Haney of Advance, NC, a brother, Raymond (Sylvia) Eshem of Sciotoville, a sister, Sharon Lee of Portsmouth, two grandchildren, Tyler (Shazana) Haney and Sara (John) Shields, two great-granddaughters, Andira and Inara Haney, and soon to be great-grandson, Asher Shields. 


Military honors will be conducted at the convenience of the family at Bennett Cemetery in Minford by the James Irwin Post #622 and William A. Baker Post #363 of the American Legion.  The family will receive friends at the BRANT FUNERAL HOME IN SCIOTOVILLE from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Monday.  Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice. 

 

Helen Eshem, 89, of Sciotoville, died Thursday, May 8, 2014 at the Bermuda Village Healthcare Center in Advance, NC.  Born on August 28, 1924 in Scioto County, she was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest Ray Sturgill, Dovie Curtis Sturgill Howard and Stephen Howard.

Helen was a member of the Minford United Methodist Church and   the Joseph Spencer Chapter of D.A.R., and was owner/operator of the former Eshem’s Grocery in Rigrish Addition.  She worked many years at the former Millhuff’s Grocery.

Also preceding her in death were her husband, Herman R. Eshem, a son, Tommy Richard Eshem, three brothers, Fred Sturgill, Roy Sturgill and Gideon Howard, and five sisters, Opal Suter, Marie Neu, Agnes Smith, Creola Mustard, and Alma Wright. 

Surviving are a daughter, Linda (Bill) Haney of Advance, NC, three sisters, Janice Conley of Inverness, FL, Genoa McFadden of Flint, MI, and Jean Varner of Amhurst, two grandchildren, Tyler (Shazana) Haney and Sara (John) Shields, two great-granddaughters, Andira and Inara Haney and soon to be great-grandson, Asher Shields.  A commital service will be held at the convenience of the family at the Bennett Cemetery in Minford with Pastor Tim Bennett officiating.  The family will receive friends at the BRANT FUNERAL HOME IN SCIOTOVILLE from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Monday.  Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice.
