Minford Tops New Boston For First Win; West, Waverly Victors
Falcons End Losing String at 20 Games

Article taken from The Portsmouth Times, Saturday, November 2, 1963, p. 17, by Gary Goodan.

Minford's Falcons ended a victory famine that had stretched through 20 straight games by taking an 8-2 decision over New Boston Friday night in a Southern Ohio Conference encounter.

The victory was the first in nine games this season for the Falcons and their first win since Oct. 20, 1961, when they defeated Piketon 20-8.

Since that last win, Minford had lost its final two games of the 1961 season, 10 games in 1962 and eight straight this year before Friday's triumph.

The loss spoiled the homecoming for New Boston as the Tigers ended their season with a 2-7 record and 2-6 in the league.  Minford is 1-8 overall and 1-7 in the SOC.

New Boston jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter when Larry Parlin tackled Minford quarterback Dale Willis in the end zone for a safety.

Minford's touchdown came at 11:11 of the fourth quarter when Roy Sloane cracked over from three yards out.  He also added the extra points.

The Falcons had one potential touchdown drive stopped at the New Boston 15 and another at the one-yard line as time ran out to end the first half.

New Boston reached the Minford 5 in the third quarter on a 38-yard pass from Ed White, to Bill Goddard.  On the next play, White attempted to pass but fumbled and Minford recovered.

The Tigers later got to the Minford 22 with 56 seconds left to play.  White's pass attempt this time was intercepted and the Falcons ran out the clock.

Dave Lodwick was a standout on defense for the Tigers as he made 21 tackles.

Minford had 11 first downs to eight for New Boston.
