James Alton Bender, 78, of Portsmouth, died Tuesday, July 28, 2009, at SOMC Hospice.
Born Nov. 22, 1930, a son of the late Thomas and Mayme Adkins Bender, he was a bricklayer for Union Local 39, a Minford High School graduate, Korean War Army veteran and a member of American Legion.
He is survived by one brother, Stanley Bender Sr. of Minford; one sister, Mrs. Nell Newman of Portsmouth; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Morris Bender, Paul Bender, Harold Bender, and Norman Bender; and one niece, Denise Lynn Bender.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009, at Erwin-Dodson-Allen Funeral Home in Minford. Burial will be at Memorial Burial Park in Wheelersburg. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and one hour before the service on Saturday.
Military graveside rites will be conducted by the James Irwin Post No. 622 American Legion.
