PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- While a grand jury prepared yesterday to hear evidence against a man accused of stabbing to death four members of a Scioto County family, two funeral homes prepared to hold services for the victims.
Scioto County Prosecutor Lynn Alan Grimshaw said that he will seek indictments today against James Ricky Curry of New Boston in the slayings of his ex-girlfriend and three of her relatives on Sunday.
Lana Spradlin, 35, and her son Daniel Jones, 10, both of Lucasville, were found dead on Sunday in Curry's apartment. Spradlin's sister Pamela Edwards, 52, and their mother, Emogene Spradlin, 78, were found dead the same day in their home in Sciotoville, an east Portsmouth neighborhood. All had stab wounds to the throat.
Grimshaw said he must have indictments before he can extradite Curry from Kentucky. An extradition hearing is scheduled for April 5.
Until the grand jury has acted, Grimshaw said, he will not discuss potential additional charges against Curry or the possibility of seeking the death penalty. Curry already is charged with four counts of aggravated murder.
Curry, 42, was arrested by Kentucky State Police on Sunday after an officer stopped him for driving erratically. Curry was charged in Kentucky with driving while under the influence of drugs.
Pennington-Bishop Funeral Home in New Boston will conduct a joint funeral for the Spradlins and Edwards at 11 a.m. Saturday, with calling hours at 4-7 p.m. today. Burial will follow in Lucasville Cemetery.
Calling hours for Daniel will be at 11 a.m.-1 p.m. today at D.W. Swick Funeral Home in New Boston then at 4-7 p.m. at Pennington-Bishop Funeral Home. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Lucasville Cemetery.
