Marie Janes Hayward
November 29, 1896 - April 6, 1943

Funeral services for Mrs. Marie Janes Hayward, 46, wife of Merritt Hayward of the Sunshine community near Sciotoville, who died Tuesday of a heart attack, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Shumway Chapel, Church of Christ, near Minford, Ohio.  O. E. Bachman of Portsmouth will officiate and burial will be in Batterson cemetery.  The body is at the residence.

Mrs. Hayward was born November 29, 1896 at Whiteside County, Illinois, a daughter of Anna Montgomery Janes and the late Byron A. James.  The family located in Scioto County in 1908 and settled near Wheelersburg.  She attended the schools there, Scioto County Normal School and Portsmouth Business college.

Mrs. Hayward was widely known as a school teacher, having taught for 25 years at the following schools:  Clinlton Furnace, Howard Furnace, Carey's Run, Wheelersburg, Glades, Sunshine, Swauger Valley and Bennett.  She held a life certificate and on Monday had taught school.  Just a short time before she was stricken, Mrs. Hayward had been discussing a western trip.

She had kept in contact with former students, many of whom now are in the armed forces.  Mrs. Hayward had worked for the betterment of her community and took an active part in the Farm Bureau council, Woman's Home Extension department, children's clubs and was a Republican committeewoman.

On March 31, 1923 at Chillicothe, she was married to Mr. Hayward, who survives.  She also leaves her mother, Mrs. Janes of Wheelersburg, a sister, Mrs. Arthur Cole of Wheelersburg and a brother, Bert Janes of Portsmouth.
