McCOY-SMITH, Shirley G. 60, of Dayton, died Sunday, November 19, at Hospice of Dayton.

Born March 5, 1946 in Columbus, a daughter of the late Luther and Elta Allen McCoy.  Shirley resided for many years in the Minford/West Portsmouth, Ohio area before moving to Dayton.

She is survived by her husband of 23 years, Jack Smith; a brother Robert (Helen) McCoy, nieces Suzanne McCoy, all of Mesa, Arizona and Sandy (Tom) Larson of Scottsdale, Arizona; stepchildren Jackie (Doug) Woods of Latham, Barb Woodford of Fairborn, David (Debra) Smith of Fairborn, Philip (Sherri) Smith of Gastonia, North Carolina; 8 step-grandchildren, 3 step-great grandchildren; an uncle Tidd McCain of Minford, several cousins and special friends, James Mitchell of Dayton, Kathleen Vernier, Judy Cooper and Jackie Servidea of West Portsmouth.

Shirley was a valedictorian of her 1964 Minford High School class, 1968 graduate of Ohio University with a Bachelor of Science in Education and a student of Famous Writers School.

She taught 5 years at Friendship School (Washington-Nile Local School District), was a reporter for the Portsmouth Daily Times and had published articles in several national magazines.

With her love of animals, she was a member of the Animal Welfare League of Scioto County and a staunch protector of the environment. She enjoyed traveling, hiking, camping and being out in nature.

As giving as Shirley was in life, she continues to do so in death by donating her remains to Wright State University, Dayton. There will be no public services. Donations can be made in her memory to Hospice of Dayton, 324 Wilmington Avenue, Dayton, Ohio 45420.
