United Brethren Church
later known as Union Church

The United Brethren Church was organized and the building was erected in Madison Township in 1867 in Section 23.  It is shown on a Madison Township map in 1875.  According to the map, it was located on the property of J. Bonzo.

The first members were:  Frederic Winter, F. M. Swaim, D. S. Wilson, James J. Martin and wife, Elizabeth McDowell and Mr. Partridge.  The first pastor was Reverend V. Zimmerman.

In 1874, the United Brethren Church and the FreeWill Baptists erected a union church to be used by both congregations on section 27.  When not used by the United Brethren and/or the FreeWill Baptists, other denominations were permitted to use the building.

The United Brethren society was organized by Reverend Jesse McCann, and many of the members came from the United Brethren congregation in Harrison Township.  This church became known as the Union Church.  (This is not the same Union Church on State Route 140 in Porter Township.)  The initial members of the Union Church were:  J. H. Stockham and wife, Simeon Wood, Elizabeth Samson and daughter, Daniel Armiller and wife and daughter, George Armiller and wife, Miss Sarah Zaler, Catherine Sweet, J. D. Stockham and wife and Mrs. Colegrove.  The pastor was George Tuttle.  The church had a regular Sabbath school and Harrison Allen was the Superintendent.

In 1884 the membership was of the United Brethren church was thirty-seven.   The Trustees were:  Joseph Kronk, F. M. Dever, Oliver Powell, P. M. Rambo and Frederic Winter.  The pastor was George Tuttle.  The church had a regular Sabbath school, and A. D. Allen was the Superintendent.
