Walter Lyon, M.D, 78, a former Minford area resident, died Wednesday, June 10, 2009 in the emergency room at Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth.
Born Oct. 13, 1930, in Minford, Ohio, he was a son of the late Hobert and Diadema Wheeler Lyon.
He was a graduate of Minford High School in the class of 1948, and was a graduate of The Ohio State University with a doctorate degree in Occupational Medicine.
He started his career at Eastman Kodak in Rochester, N.Y., and spent most of his medical career with Proctor & Gamble at the corporate headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio. He retired as medical director for Martin Marietta Corporation/USEC in Piketon, Ohio, served four years in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict, and attended Center Street United Methodist Church in Lucasville.
He is survived by his wife; Shirley Evans Lyon, whom he married on Aug. 9, 1958, in Columbus, Ohio; two sons, Glen Lyon and Christopher (Laura) Lyon; one daughter and son-in-law, Lexie Lyon and Deron Voegele; five grandchildren, Brittany Lyon, Gabraielle Lyon, Cheyenne Lyon, Shaye Lyon, and Kennedy Lyon; one brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Kiyoka Lyon; and two sisters, Ruth Bennett and Lucille Casteel.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, June 14, 2009, at Erwin-Dodson-Allen Funeral Home in Minford, with Pastor Phil Howard and Dwight Bennett officiating. Burial will be in Scioto Burial Park at Rushtown.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and one hour before the service on Sunday. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the James Irwin Post No. 622 American Legion.
