William "Bill" Walter
November 19, 1928 - January 8, 2021


PORTSMOUTH - William "Bill" Walter, 92, of Portsmouth, formally of Minford, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 8, 2021 at Hill View Retirement Center. He was born November 19, 1928 in Scioto County. Bill as he was known to everyone was the son of John and Clara (Born) Walter. He was one of five children, brothers: Charles (Marie), John (Louise), James (Maxine), Robert (Jean), and one sister, Alice (Ray) Lee.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Joan (Halliday) Walter; a grandson, Christopher Walter, and one great-grandson, Kenneth Mason Coriell.

Bill is survived by his son, William "Buck" (Shirley) Walter and a daughter, Sue Ann "Susie" (Kennie) Coriell; his grandchildren, Chad Walter, Stephanie (Darrell) Tobins, Amanda (Aaron Mossbarger) Walter, Wesley (Linni) Coriell, Wade (Amy) Coriell, Sara (Chad) McHenry; great grandchildren, Chloe Walter, Tyler and Trent Tobins, Christine Eing, Clair Mossbarger, Gracyn and Hadley Coriell, Tyler and Sydney Speas, Walker, Lily and Cambell McHenry. Bill is also survived by a very special lovely lady, Marie Riley who he spent his remaining years with at Hill View.

Bill graduated from Minford High School in the class of 1948 where he played baseball and basketball. He was honored by being placed on the 2011 Minford High School Wall of Fame. After high school he entered the U.S. Air Force and eventually stationed in Alaska for his tour of duty. He was a member of Post 23 of the American Legion.

Bill was an active member in his younger years of the Minford Athletic Boosters. He and the early members were instrumental in planning and building the first football field at Minford. He was a coach for many in Minford Little League, Pee Wee Football and baseball.

Bill was a member of the First Lutheran Church on Grandview. He and Joan worked the Baby Pantry.

He deeply loved his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and his extended English family Alan and Jo Anne Kemp, Tony and Carol Havell and Steven and Tina Havell.

The family would like to thank Hill View Second Floor Skilled Nursing staff, administrators, rehab employees, maintenance, all nursing aides and techs, and dining room staff for all their unselfish, assistance, care and especially their love for Bill.

The family would also like to thank the waitresses and other employees of the Minford Airport for their kindness toward our parents.

Due to COVID restrictions and social distancing, the family will conduct services and burial privately. Arrangements are under the direction of Erwin-Dodson-Allen Funeral Home in Minford. The family requests no flowers, that all donations be sent to the Minford Athletic Boosters, c/o the Minford High School girls and boys soccer teams or Hill View Second Floor Skilled Nursing and Rehab.
