Charles L. Hutchinson, 84, of Woods Ridge Road, Portsmouth, went to be with the Lord Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, at SOMC Hospice.

 

Born July 6, 1925, in Scioto County, Ohio, a son of the late Louis Franklin and Sarah

 

Elenora Crawford Hutchinson, he was a 1943 graduate of Minford High School.
 
He was a former S.O.C.F. officer and locksmith, a greeter at Wal-Mart for 15 years and a member of Swauger Valley Free Will Baptist Church where he was a Senior Deacon, song leader, Sunday school superintendent and adult Bible teacher.
 
Charles served in the U.S. Army in the 4th Eng. Spec. Brigade from December 1943 to January 1946, where he obtained the rank of a staff sergeant, and he served in the South Pacific in communications, radio operator and message center clerk.  He earned the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with three bronze stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star, Good Conduct Medal, and Victory Medal.  His outfit was awarded three presidential citations.  He was in two major combat landings and went to Japan as some of the first occupation troops at OSAKA and Kobe, Japan. He was past commander and current chaplain of VFW Post 3638 and James Irwin Post No. 622 American Legion.

 

He is survived by his wife, Mary Daniels Hutchinson whom he married March 22, 1947; three daughters, Donna Jean (Ron) Parker of Portsmouth, Brenda Kay (Jim) Potters of Portsmouth, and Mary Ann (Joe) Krake of Min-ford; 10 grandchildren, Amy Perry, Shane Parker, Jamie Brown, Laura Alley, Jim Potters, Anna Potters, Tracy Hatfield, Nathan Sexton, Zachary Sexton and Ryan Hutchinson; 14 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Billy J. Hutchinson of Portsmouth, Ralph Hutchinson of Minford and Jimmy Hutchinson of Johnstown; and two sisters, Peggy (Jack) Maddox of Franklin Furnace and Linda (Bobby) Green of Portsmouth. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Gary Lee Hutchinson and John L. Hutchinson; and two brothers, Norman Hutchinson and Richard L. Hutchinson.

 

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009, at Swauger Valley Free Will Baptist Church, with Pastor Ron Parker, Pastor Mike Simpson and Jeremy Hatfield officiating. Burial will be in Old Wheelersburg Cemetery in Wheelersburg. Friends may call at Erwin-Dodson-Allen Funeral Home in Minford from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and one hour before the service on Thursday at the church. Military graveside rites will be conducted by James Irwin Post No. 622 American Legion.
