HISTORY OF CROSS COUNTRY AT MHS
The first written record that could be located about Minford's cross country history appeared in The Portsmouth Times, November 17, 1930, p. 3:
Salem Wins Third Annual Track Meet
Salem High School won the third annual state cross-country meet at the Ohio State stadium on Saturday, November 15. Columbus East and Dayton Roosevelt tied for second place.
Thirty teams started. Salem's time was 13 minutes, 11 1/2 seconds. This broke the state record by 6 1/2 seconds.
For the first time in its history, Minford High School entered an athletic team in a state meet. The boys who ran were George Shope, Lawrence Smith, Ivan Parks, Joe Brisker, Marvin Allen, Elmer Williams and Woodrow Scott. Billy Lewis went as an alternate but did not run. These boys played a hard game of basketball at Green High school on Friday night and drove to Columbus early Saturday morning. So it was no small accomplishment when they placed ninth.
The boys appreciated the fine reception given by Ohio State University. Each boy was given a box seat ticket and a program to the Ohio-Pitt football game. Then to finish a glorious day, the Minford coach treated him team by taking them to the Ohio Theatre.
