Everling Hired To Fill Minford Post

Harold E. Everling is the new executive head of Minford Local School District.

The veteran teacher, coach, and administrator was hired on a three-year contract by Minford school board Thursday night as successor to Edward R. Hall.

Everling received a unanimous vote from the five-member board.

The board also employed Richard (Dick) Rannells, now of Blanchester, on a one-year contract as Everling's successor as Minford High School principal, and awarded a two-year contract to William E. Caudill as head football and reserve basketball coach.  Everling is to begin his new duties August 1 at a salary of $9,000 a year on a 12-month basis.  His contract calls for increases to $9,200 and $9,500 in the next two years.

Rannells was employed on a one-year contract, also starting August 1.

The 48-year-old Everling, principal at Minford since 1960, fills a vacancy left by board failure to rehire Hall at the terminiation of his three-year contract.  That action at the April board meeting raised a protest from many residents of the school district.

In other board action, William Coriell was rehired as guidance counselor, along with the elementary school administrative staff.

Bernard Bennett is to continue as grade school principal, with Harold Allen as head teacher at Madison, Seldon Fisher at Swauger Valley, Edna McLaughlin at Bonser Run and Frank Merrill at Sunshine.

Resignations were accepted from Jack Campbell, who is going to Frankfort (Ross County) as football coach, and Mrs. Cleo P. Wellman, high school English teacher.

Mrs. Phyllis Sparks resigned as school secretary, and Mrs. Jo Ann Steiff, commercial instructor, was employed to fill the post during the summer.

Summer Work OK'd

The board approved plans for a five-week remedial reading course to be conducted this summer by Audry Miller and for continuation of summer band classes under the directory of larry Raines, instrumental music director.

Mrs. Steiff, was granted use of the high school typing room for a class of adults.

A motion was approved to adopt a new salary schedule effective January 1, and approval was given to monthly cafeteria and general fund bills.  The board also approved obtaining insurance on the locker room and its contents at the new football field.

Authority was given to hire the architectural firm of Donaldson, Donaldson & Wittnemyer to prepare specifications for a new furnace at Madison School and for repairs at Sunshine School.

Everling has been at Minford since the fall of 1960 when he ended a 14-year career as football coach at Portsmouth West High School.

He took the West job when the school started footbal in 1946 and molded the Senators into a Southern Ohio Conference powerhouse in the early 1950's.

Including the first few lean, green years, Everling's teams posted a record of 73 wins, 49 losses, and 3 ties and won three SOC championships.

Everling was a standout athlete at Glenwood High School in New Boston.  He was graduated from Glenwood in 1934 and went on to Eastern Kentucky State College where he received his bachelor of science degree.  He later studied at the University of Kentucky and received his master's degree from Ohio University.

The new executive head taught and coached at Glenwood in the early 1940's and returned there for a year after military service during World War II.  He moved to West at the beginning of the 1946 school year.

Everling and his wife, the former Frances Oliver of New Boston, reside in West Portsmouthat 606 City View Avenue.  They have a son, Harold E. (Chip) Everling, Jr. who is to be graduated next week from Ohio State University and plans to take a job in Washington with the Department of Defense.

Rannells Former Coach

Rannells, the new high school principal, has been athletic director and head coach at Blanchester, his home town, the last four years.

He is married to the former Jane Carver, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ora Carver of Minford.  The Rannellses have one daughter, Robyn.

Rannells, 30, received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Morehead, Kentucky State College and has taught at Blanchester since college graduation.

He is a Korean veteran.

The Rannellses expect to move here this summer.
