Soldier Killed in Action, Navy Youth Missing
Two Scioto County men were listed today as casualties of World War II.
Cpl. Lewis Willard Darnell, 23, son of Lewis Darnell 1833 ½ Highland Avenue was listed as killed in action somewhere in the Pacific area.
Seaman First Class John Clinton Karr, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Karr of Sciotoville Route 2 was reported missing. He was a member of a Navy crew aboard a merchant ship.
Seaman Karr enlisted in the Navy on January 19, 1942 and took his basic training at Great Lakes Naval Training school. He was aboard a ship which was sunk last December and at that time was granted a 21-day casualty leave which permitted him to spend the Christmas holidays with his family.
He reported back for duty January 7 and was last heard from 7 weeks ago when he was aboard a merchant ship on an east coast port.
Mr. and Mrs. Karr live on Swauger Valley-Minford road 4 miles north of Sciotoville on Niner Hill.
Seaman Karr was born at the present resident on March 5, 1922. He attended Minford High School, and prior to his entering the service he was employed by Mitchellace, Inc.
Besides his parents, he has a brother, Frank Karr, and a sister Olive Karr, both at home.
