Leonard Elmer Downs, 73, died Aug. 25, 2003 in a Virginia Beach hospital.
He was born in Portsmouth, Ohio, and was retired from the U.S. Navy as a chief petty officer after 20 years of service. He also retired from the Virginia Beach School Board. Mr. Downs was a naval veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars, member of the Fleet Reserve Association and was of the Presbyterian faith.
Mr. Downs is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Mary E. Downs; a daughter, Beverly Ann Richardson of Virginia Beach; a son, Gary Allen Downs of Virginia Beach; two sisters and two brothers that live in Ohio; and three grandchildren, Dawn Elizabeth Downs, Matthew Collier Richardson and Thomas Allen Richardson, all of Virginia Beach. He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Edwin ''Butch'' Richardson. He was loved by his wife, children and grandchildren, and will be missed by all who knew him.
A private graveside service will be held in Princess Anne Memorial Park. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel, in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters.
