Phillis Hired For Columbiana Job

William L. Phillis, superintendent of the Minford Local School District since July 1966, has been hired as superintendent of Columbiana County schools at Salem.

Phillis, a native of Salem, was one of 19 applicants for the post.  He was given a two-year contract at $15,000 a year plus an automobile allowance of $600 a year.  He is to assume his duties at Salem August 1.

The educator, who came to Minford from Southeastern High School in Ross County, where he had served as agriculture instructor five years and his last three as principal.  He was awarded a three-year contract at Minford, with a beginning salary of $10,000.  Since that time the salary has increased.

Phillis was graduated from Salem High School in 1954 and received bachelor and master's degrees from Ohio University.  He is working toward a doctorate.

In the new position he will succeed James L. McBride, superintendent of the Columbiana County system since 1950, and an educator for 42 years.

The system includes four local school district.

Phillis is a member of Ohio and National Education Associations, the Ohio Association of School Administrators, the president's advisory council of Ohio Valley College at Parkersburg, West Virginia, the advisory council of Midwestern Children's Home near Cincinnati; secretary of Southeastern Ohio Unified Purchasing Committee, and treasurer of Fort Hill Christian Youth Camp near Hillsboro.

He and Mrs. Phillis, parents of two daughters, are members of Sunshine Church of Christ near Minford.

Phillis' parents, Mr. and Mrs. George B. Phillis, still live near Salem.
